John Samples was listed in George White's "Statistics of the State of Georgia" printed in Savannah in 1849 where he was listed as 80 years old. In the 1850 census John and Frances were both listed as 75 years old meaning they would both have been born in 1775. In the 1860 census John was listed as 98 and Frances was listed as 96 years old meaning that John would have been born in 1762 and Frances in 1764.

I think it most likely that Frances Couch was actually born no earlier than 1775 since her last child was born in 1820. The evidence indicates that John may have been born closer to 1760 however. This makes it seem likely that John was married previously and may have had children older than Z. M.

These older children would have been out of their father's house prior to his moving to Georgia and may have stayed in Tennessee.
